George Washington Carver

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share more of our black history month studies. We learned all about George Washington Carver. My kids were amazed at his determination and his kindness. Here are some of the fun activities we did.

Henry's Freedom Box Lapbook

Hi guys! I hope you are having a wonderful week. Since February is Black History Month the boys and I have been reading and learning a great deal about some great men and women who have made a change. We read Henry's Freedom Box which is a sad and beautiful story. The illustrations that accompany the story is breath taking, you can see all the emotions of each character. Here are some of the lapbook activities we worked on.

Sequencing Henry's freedom path

We discussed all the challenges Henry faced during his time. 

We also worked on a cause and effect foldable. 

Vocabulary from the book and facts about the Underground Railroad.

We also talked about mood and the boys picked two scenes from the book and wrote about how they felt while reading about it. 

The boys wrote how they wanted people to be treated it. "Everyone should be treated with respect."

For Grammar the boys worked on a mentor sentence from the book. We analyzed the sentence and our focus was complex sentences. 

We had a wonderful time reading Henry's Freedom Box. I highly recommend it.

Jane Goodall Biography Brochure

Hi guys! Happy Friday :). I hope you guys had a fun and productive week. One of my goals this year was to focus a lot on writing. Informational, biographies, narrative, etc. I am happy to say that we are accomplishing this goal. Today I wanted to share with you my sons Jane Goodall biography brochure report and art project. All resources are mentioned at the end of the post.

He really enjoyed learning all about her and her passion for animals. 

He gathered most of his information from this book and The Watcher which is more

detailed than Me...Jane. 

We also used QR codes for safe online research. 

Art Project:

I requested that I draw the chimp for him and I was okay with that. I made the outline and he added the details.Painted it and added texture. 

He cut out a tree trunk from brown construction paper and added detail using

black chalk pastels. He also used green and yellow paper to add leaves. 

 The art project was fun and easy. I think he could have drawn his own chimp if he wanted to.

The instructions were really clear and easy to follow.

The Circulatory System Activities

Hi guys! I hope you guys are having an amazing week. We recently covered the heart and circulatory system in our science curriculum. This was a heavy chapter full of information, to insure the boys understood everything we supplemented with videos and hands on activities. Here are some of our favorite.

Edible Heart Model:

Activity from apologia anatomy and physiology text book. 

completed model. It was really messy but really worth it. 

Circulatory System:

We used hot wheels to review how the blood travels around the body. Blue cars for deoxygenated blood and red cars for oxygenated blood. 

This was a fun hands on way to help them remember all the names of the veins arteries involved.

We also watched a Bill Nye video to help drive home the concepts we learned in the book. 

Mini Anchor Chart:

I love making anchor charts with the boys. It helps them recall information that we read about and we can display it to review.

Viking Longhouse

Hi guys! The boys have been enjoying learning all about Vikings. We recently put together a Viking longhouse after reading about them.

The boys painted the box and added basket shredding to the roof of the long house. 

the boys built animal stall using popsicle sticks.

the boys also added a Viking guarding his house. 

they also added their narration to their house. 

The boys loved making this longhouse and in their excitement we forgot to add a door and a hole on the roof since the Vikings didn't have windows.

Animal Research Project

Hi guys! I hope you guys had a nice week. The boys have been hard at work doing an animal research project. My 3rd grader researched polar bears while my 1st grader researched lions. Along with the written report they both chose to make posters to go along with their projects.

Here are the resources both boys used to collect information on their animals. 

Along with the books they boys also used QR codes to find information online. 

Once they gathered all their information they wrote their rough draft. I also asked them to 

pick three words to define for their reader.

My 3rd grader always types up his final report. He included his source page and glossary too.
