Roll and Cover Farm

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share with you a little farm themed math activity I put together for my son. He loves all things animal related.

Material You Will Need:

1. Farm Printable (at the end of this post)
2. Dice template 
3. Something to cover the numbers (I used farm animal counters) 

He didn't want to roll the dice at first so I rolled it for him. He would call out the number and place a farm counter on the corresponding number on the mat.

1st Grade Independent Reading List (2016-2017)

Hi guys Today I wanted to share with you our first graders independent reading list for this upcoming school year. Even though he is an official 1st grader this year he reads at about a 3rd grade level. I have to also mention that he isn't that enthusiastic about reading. He will read whenever I ask him to pick a book and read but he won't read on his own (does that make sense). I did some searching on books that think he will like and this is what I came up with.

But before I share the list with you can we talk about this Heidi Swapp light box. I am in love! I purchased it at Michael's with a 40% coupon. The sign is from Learning in Wonderland. Now back to the list :).

1. Canadian Flyer Series;
This series is sort of like The Magic Tree House series except it goes over Canadian facts and history. Both boys will read through this series and see how much we can get through. These books will tie into our Canadian geography studies.

 2. Rosco Riley Series

I believe there are 7 books in this series. I've never read any of them but based on the reviews it sounds like something that he might enjoy. I purchased the first 3 books and will get the rest once I see if he likes it or not.

3. Non Fiction

I've chosen 3 non-fiction for him to read 1 biography and 2 history based books. I love the step into reading books and so does he. I was glad when I discovered their biography and history readers.  Discovery in a cave, I am Jane Goodall , Explorers who made it or died trying.

 To go along with his reading I purchased him a Read and Response Journal from lakeshore learning. We will also be using a fiction comprehension tub from lakeshore learning. 

The comprehension tubs can be used for any book which I love.

To encourage him with his reading I created a reading folder to keep track of all the books he reads. At the back of the folder I put a reading certificate to award to him at the end of the school year. Once he is finished with a book he can either check it off or place a sticker next to the book.

Preschool Letter C Activities

Letter: C

Shape: Triangle

Vocabulary Theme: Transportation 

Hi guys! I am sharing another of our letter themed activities today. We focused on the letter C and all things transportation. 

Math

We counted from 1-10 and focused on some 1:1 correspondence. He has gotten the hang of counting and recognizes his numbers from 1-10 now so we will be moving on and learning from 11-20 next.

We also worked on some shape recognition, our main focus was triangle. Thanks to Preschool Prep he is getting really good at his shapes.

Fine Motor

With this activity he practiced both color recognition and fine motor skills. I gave him some jars and filled it with a little bit of food color and water. I called out a color and he used the eye dropper to suck up the water and put it into an empty jar. He played with this activity for a long time.

Sensory Play

 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom sensory play with colored rice and pony bead alphabets. 

 The alphabet mats are from Kinder Tribe.

Language Activities

Beginning Sound Practice With Cars

We've been on a roll with our car themed activities. Today I wanted to share with you a fun hands on way that we practiced beginning sounds. This activity is easy to set up and it's a lot of fun.

Materials:

1. Objects that start with each letter (I used Safari Toob figurines)
2. Cars 
3. Tape
4. Marker

I gathered all the objects that I had around the house and some cars. I Used painters tape and wrote the beginning sounds for each object and adhered it to the car. That's it very low prep! I had my son lay out all the figurines and I would say the name of the object emphasizing the beginning sound (ex: /a/ /a/ alligator) "can you find me /a/. Once he found the sound I was asking for he would drive the car over and park it next to the alligator.

 If you don't have cars you can simple use letters or any other object you have around the house.

Parking Garage Number Activity

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share with you a fun easy activity that your toddler/preschooler will love. We've been working on all things letter C around here and my little guy is obsessed with cars. To do this activity what you will need is;

1. large board or paper 
2. cars
3. dot stickers to write the numbers on
4. marker

I drew out my parking garage on a foam project board that I had lying around and used dot stickers to write the numbers 1-10 and adhered them to the cars. It's super simple and he played with it for hours. The objective of the activity is for your child to match the number on the car to the number in the parking space.

Bug Color Sorting Activity

Hi guys! I wanted to share with you a fun and low prep activity that your toddler/preschooler will love.

Material you will need:

1. Muffin Tin (I got mine from the dollar store)
2. Bug counters 
3. construction paper in varies colors
4. Magnets 
5. Tweezers   

I used my circle puncher to punch out 6 circles (yellow, orange, red, purple and green). I put a piece of magnet on the back of each circle so that the paper does not move around.

 I set out the activity and he went to work sorting each color into its place. He played with this activity all week long.

I added the tweezers to give him more fine motor practice. You can just have your child sort it with their fingers.

Preschool Letter B Activities

Letter: B

Color: Yellow

Shape: Circle

Vocabulary theme: Butterflies/Bugs

Hi guys! I'm back to share another letter of the week activities with you. We took last week off because of Eid we had lots of fun with the family. This week we concentrated on the letter B.

Math
For math we worked on number identification and 1:1 correspondence using Montessori sand paper numbers and butterfly Safari Toob. He enjoyed tracing the numbers and counting all the different butterflies.

We also worked on color recognition using some colorful bugs that I purchased on amazon.

This was by far his favorite activity all week. He requested to play with the bugs all week long. 

We also worked on size sorting Large, Medium, Small

Sensory Play

For sensory he explored bugs with beans and a magnifying glass. 

Learning Notebook

Uppercase/lowercase sort

 beginning spelling practice. Matching letters. 

 Letter B Mystery Bag

 He loves our mystery bag activity. We practiced beginning /b/ sound b is for baby, bottle, bee, ball, button.

 Craft

 Our focus color was Yellow this week so we painted our butterfly yellow.

Fine Motor 

I didn't take many pictures of him cutting because I needed to closely supervise him with this activity.
