Art Around the World: Tangrams (Ancient Chinese Puzzle)

Ni Hao,

Todays art around the world comes to you from China. Tangrams are an ancient Chinese puzzle. The object of the puzzle is to use the seven tangram pieces to form new figures. It is a lot more difficult then it looks. To go along with our craft/puzzle we read Grandfather Tang's Story.

This can be used as a math lesson, its great cognitive hands on practice, but we chose to make it an art lesson.

I printed the tangram pieces on different colored paper just to give it a pop of color. This was part of a continent unit that my boys and I have been loving. This craft came with examples of different animals that you can make.

They were a bit intimidated at first but once they got the hang of it they really started to enjoy it.

This was my older sons "Bird"

This is my younger sons "Bear"

This is another "Bird" that they made together.

I am not sure if we did these 100% correct, but we enjoyed it and made some beautiful creations.

  2. Tangram are so neat and are so good for kiddos to think outside the box and be able to create something unique and foreign. We need to do this. Perfect for a rainy kind of day. :)
