Water Filtration Project

Hi guys! I hope you had a fabulous week. I wanted to share with you a fun water filtration project the kids and I did. This activity ties into our science and geography units. We followed the instructions in Apologia Exploring Creation with Physics and Chemistry. The boys loved ever minute of this project.

We started by going for a nature walk and collecting water from
our local river.

Here's the water we collected.

When we got home we set up our filtration system. I won't go
into details because it's part of the lesson in the book.

The boys started pouring the dirty water through the filtration slowly.

our container was really large so it's hard to see the water
but it was clean. Of course not clean enough to drink because it
didn't go through the treatment process.

This was an amazing lesson and the boys got to see first hand how to filter water. I hope you enjoyed seeing this project.

Inuit of the Arctic Week 1

Hi guys! We are officially back to school this week. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed some hands on activities for our Unit Study on the Inuit. Here are some of the activities we worked on this week.

We learned all about the Arctic Tundra and made a salt dough map of the Arctic.

I got the idea from Tina's Dynamic Homeschool

Once the boys finished their map they worked on a foldable and watched a brainpop video

You can grab this foldable here

What are Landforms?

Today was the first day in our landforms and bodies of water unit study. We read some great books, watched some videos, and made our first vocabulary card.

We read from these two books, and the boys narrated to me.

After we read from both books the boys drew and painted their vocabulary card. We used a picture in one of the books for inspiration.

The boys copied their narrations onto the vocabulary card.

I laminated both cards so that they would last longer and water color tends to bend the paper.

The vocabulary cards turned out wonderful, we will be making one for the different landforms we will study. This will help them remember the different vocabulary.

Make sure to check out this post for all the books, printables, and hands on things we will be doing during this unit study.

Landforms and Bodies of Water Unit Study

Hi guys! We will be starting a fun unit study on landforms and bodies of water this month. During our geography study the boys were asking a lot different of questions, "what's a bay, peninsula, gulf, etc." To answer all those questions I put together this unit study and I thought I share it here to help anyone looking to do a unit study on this topic.

Books:
I gathered our books from the library and our bookshelves. I will keep them in a baskets for the boys to explore during their independent reading time.

Notebooking Pages:
We will be notebooking and using worksheets to help aid in our studies. Here are some of the printables we will be using (some of these printables are free and others cost money).
  1. Landforms Unit
  2. All about Landforms
  3. Landforms, Continents, and Oceans
  4. Landforms layer book
  5. Land and water printable
  6. Erosion lab activity
  7. Land and water form cards
  8. Weathering and Erosion

Hands on fun:

We will be building our own volcano, geyser experiment, and making our own landforms using air dry clay. At the end of our study the boys will make their own island and create different landforms and write about it.

Vocabulary Building:

The boys will utilize the pocket chart to practice matching vocabulary.

I will also be keeping learning posters up in our classroom.

The boys will also each create their own vocabulary cards to go along with this unit.

Schedule:

I've put together a very loose schedule for us to follow. I will share more details once I tweak it a bit more.

I can't wait to explore and learn along side the boys. This unit will last the entire month and we will slowly work through it using living books and narrations.
