Africa

The boys and I have been studying all about Africa. We read books, worked on some notebooking pages, and played a really fun game that I put together. The game helped us learn the different countries in Africa.

We learned about The Empires of Ghana, Mali, and Kushi. We also watched some documentries about ancient Africa, salt minning, and gold minning. We also learned about trade caravans.

Panning for Gold

For my little ones (6 and 4) we read Magic Treehouse books Lions at Lunchtime and Good Morning, Gorillas. We read about different animals in Africa and they also enjoyed playing the map game with their older brothers.

The older boys also practiced drawing Africa using the book Draw Africa. By the end of the unit they were able to draw the continent from memory.

We combined our art and notebooking together. Here the boys drew camels traveling in a trade caravan.

I put this fun game together for the boys and I to play to help us learn all the countries in Africa. You can grab a copy for free just click on the picture above. Instructions on how to play the game are included in the file. I hope you enjoy it just as much as we did.

Water Filtration Project

Hi guys! I hope you had a fabulous week. I wanted to share with you a fun water filtration project the kids and I did. This activity ties into our science and geography units. We followed the instructions in Apologia Exploring Creation with Physics and Chemistry. The boys loved ever minute of this project.

We started by going for a nature walk and collecting water from
our local river.

Here's the water we collected.

When we got home we set up our filtration system. I won't go
into details because it's part of the lesson in the book.

The boys started pouring the dirty water through the filtration slowly.

our container was really large so it's hard to see the water
but it was clean. Of course not clean enough to drink because it
didn't go through the treatment process.

This was an amazing lesson and the boys got to see first hand how to filter water. I hope you enjoyed seeing this project.

Anansi the Spider Craft

We are on to ancient Africa in our history curriculum. We were introduced to a wonderful African folk tale "Anansi the Spider."

I checked out a few versions of this popular African folktale, and the boys enjoyed all the versions. I think I read 4 different ones in one sitting.

One of the activities suggested was to make Anansi the spider using some Styrofoam balls. I didn't have any on hand so, I put together a printable craft. It is available for free, for you to download at the end of this post.

I printed ours on black construction paper. You can do the same or just have your child color with a black marker/crayon.

We used oil pastels to add some patterns and color to our spider.

The boys weaved a spiders web using a paper plate and some yarn.

We attached "Anansi" to her web and our craft was complete.

Art Around the World Morocco

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you another Art Around the World post. This craft comes to you from Morocco.

Material:
Download your template print and cut out the lanterns. I used an x-acto knife to cut out the windows just so I could get clean lines. You could do the cutting or just have your child cut out the larger pattern and you cut out the windows.

Place your contact paper behind the window and have fun adding the colorful tissue paper. Once your child is all done, put it up your beautiful lanterns.
