Canada Map Activities

As we wrap up our Canada study, we've been focusing on map drawing and labeling. We are using the Draw Canada book to help him learn to draw the map from memory.

We used the pin it map pack from Montessori print shop to practice labeling.

We also played map bingo and used our Montessori puzzle.

He practices daily on the whiteboard for 5 to 10 minutes. Finally he drew it on a large watercolor paper and painted and labeled.

He also wrote and researched landmarks and bodies of water.

We also learned about major rivers of Canada. We made a salt dough model of a river. You can read all about it here

Compass Rose

To help my boys learn about the compass rose we did some fun hands on activities. Here are some of the things we did.

We started by reviewing the cardinal directions using 3 part cards from The Modern Montessori Guide.

Next we made a compass rose out of salt dough. We used a template from Kids Activities Blog.

We glued all the pieces together with hot glue.

Topography Activitie

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you some topography activities we did during our geography study.

We started of by watching this YouTube video. It was a really good introduction to a topic that might be hard to understand.

After the video we made a our own playdough mountain. We used floss to cut the different layers. We then traced it on to our paper. The further the contour lines were from each other the flatter that part of the mountain is. The closer the lines are together the steeper the mountain is.

We also used foam sheets to make another example of contour lines.

Older boys used cardboard to make their contour lines. This was such a fun and beautiful activity. You can get the full instructions from Beauty of Plays map curriculum.  She has book suggestions and more topography hands on activities to make this lesson come to life.

Here is another really good video we watched demonstrating how mountains are drawn on a map.
