Botany Unit Study

  "وَمِن كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ جَعَلَ فِيهَا زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ"

(Of all fruits (Allah) placed (on the earth) two of a pair). Surah: 13, Verse: 3

Hi guys, we recently completed a mini botany unit during our Quebec study. We used two units from Allamah Education. We used their seed study and plant classification unit. Here are some of the activities we did.

Seeds

We learned all about the parts of a seed, life cycle of a bean plant, seed dispersal, and planted our seed to observe the life cycle.

Seed dispersal video

Plant Cell
We learned all about the plant cell and made a cake model. You can read all about our cell activities. here and here.

Parts of a Plant

We learned about the different parts of a plant (roots, stem, and leaves) and each of their function. We also learned about the needs of a plant (air, water, soil, sun).

My 8 year old made a model of a tree from Lego and labeled all the parts.

We did an experiment to learn how plants absorb water through their roots, stems, and leaves.

Leaves

Photosynthesis

Puzzle is from Alison's Montessori free worksheet from Education.com

Photosynthesis experiment. Observing oxygen bubbles released by the leaf.

Maple Syrup

We learned all about maple syrup and how it is made. We also learned about the maple tree. We made pancakes to include our study.

We read about the story of Adam (as) and used this free worksheet to sequence the story.

We also did the tafseer of Surah Teen. We used the Mini tafseer Series from Ad-Duha Institute and traced the verses using the Juzz 'Ammah tracing book

Lastly, we read about the story of Prophet Zakariya and researched Olive trees.

Tafseer Time Basket

My kids and I love listening to tafseer and spending time learning and connecting with the words of our Creator. I aim for at least two days out of the week but we end up doing it more often. Today I wanted to share with you what my kids do during that time when they are listening. I put together a basket "our tafseer time basket" and here are some of the things I've included.

1. Puzzles

We are currently working on this 1000 piece puzzle of the Hagia Sophia. We've done other puzzles and my kids love it. Click on the image to purchase this puzzle.

2. Coloring books/ Sticker books

My kids love these paint by sticker books.

3. Lego

We have this classic Lego set my kids enjoy building with.

4. Sketchbook/Drawing Books

We also love sketch books for the kids to doodle on.

5. I spy

We don't play this as a game. One person will just sit and match the cards to the board.

6. Bingo

Just like the I spy game above this will be used by one child to just match. It's cat themed because my kids are cat obsessed.

Quranic Vocabulary Resources

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you some of our favorite resources for teaching Quranic Vocabulary in our homeschool.

Each book has 5 to 10 words from the Surah

These are the three resources we used often for myself and my boys. I hope it will be of benefit to you in your Quran journey. None of the links are affiliate links. They are there for your convenience.

Surah Mutaffifin

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you some activities we did during our tafseer study of Surah Mutaffifin.

We started out by listening to the tafseer.

We also read from the mini tafseer series by Ad-Duha Institute

After the boys understood the tafseer of the surah we worked on some vocabulary words.
Vocabulary words are from the mini tafseer book.

Since this surah focuses on those who cheat others and how much Allah dislikes this act we learned the name of Allah Al-'Adl.  Asmaa' Ul-Husnaa Set.

We added the name to our 99 names of Allah tree.

My older boys (13, 11) worked on word to word translation and Tajweed.

We also tied in some history by learning about Prophet Shu'aib. We used The Prophet's of Allah Unit Study.

The Prophet's of Allah unit contains some geography. We learned all about gulfs. The boys made the Gulf of Mexico from salt dough and learn some facts.

Finally to conclude our study each child picked a verse or something that stayed with them and made it from Lego. Here my son chose the verses that talk about the rewards for those who enter Jannah.

عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ
On adorned couches, observing. (Vs. 23)

We talked about the affects of sin on the heart and discussed vs. 14. He made a heart from Lego. He added black pieces to show the dots that go on our hearts as a result of our sins.

One of my son's focused on the the first four verses and made a scale from Lego since the surah talks about those who cheat or give less when purchasing or selling.

Lastly we used these gorgeous Surah strips to review with daily. Please follow Anjum on Instagram for more details and sign up for her mailing list to get notification for when these strips are released. She also has an etsy shop.

My older boys and I had a challenge going during our time studying this surah. We would recite Surah Mutaffifin in at least one of our salah so we can reflect on its meaning. At the end of the week we treated ourselves to some sweets. Reciting and reflecting upon the meaning is an important part of our worship. It helps with khushoo during salah and increases in Eeman.

She currently has a Juzz 'Ammah collaboration going with crafts and activities. Please follow the #craftyourjuzzamma

Parts of a Plant Cell

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you some activities we did to learn all the different parts of a plant cell.

First we learned all the different parts using poster cards and a coloring page.

Here is a quick short video we watched to help us learn the parts of a plant cell.

After my son learned all the different parts, he colored in his worksheet and labeled.

The rest of the week he used this plant cell plushy to review and practice. You can grab yours from Amazon

Our final project was baking a plant cell cake.

You can read all about it by clicking on the image above.

Plant Cell Cake

Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you some of the activities we did when we learned all about the plant cell.

We reviewed all the parts of a plant cell and compared it to an animal cell, which we've studied before.
Plant Cell posters are free and you can grab them from here

Plant cell colored and labeled.

This was my son's favorite activity. Labeling the parts of a plant cell using this pillow. I purchased mine from Amazon.

Then my son baked and decorated a plant cell cake.

I used free labels I found here and attached them to toothpicks.
