Hi guys! We recently wrapped up our study on the province of Quebec. Here is some of the activities we worked on.

The boys always start off with coloring the province coloring sheet. 

We dissected an owl pallet and learned all about owls. 

We also learned all about Chateau Frontenac and did a fun penny experiment. You can read all about that here. 

 Quebec is Canada's largest maple syrup producer, so we read this wonderful book called At Grandpa's Sugar Bush. We learned how maple syrup is made.

Preschool Letter V Activities

Letter: V

Vocabulary Focus: Vegetable and Volcano

Colors: Review Color Words

Numbers: Counting 1-20

Hi guys! It's been a while since I wrote about our letter of the week activities. My preschooler was not really into the activities, but lately he has shown some interest in going back to his letter activities. This week we focused on letter V.

Phonics:

Letter V beginning sound basket. I had him match the small objects to the picture cards. You can grab the printable for these cards at the end of the post.

Math:

Count the dots and match them to the correct number. I want him to eventually recognize the pattern of dots without having to count.

Sensory/Fine Motor:

He made vegetable prints on the play dough. 

washing vegetables. We talked about all the different names of the vegetables. 

Craft:

We went through one of our local grocery store flyers and picked out different vegetables. I helped him cut them out and he glued them to the letter V.

Make A Penny Turn Green

Hi guys! The boys and I have been learning all about Quebec which is the largest province in Canada. One famous building in Quebec City is The Chateau Frontenac.

The Chateau Frontenac is a grand hotel in Quebec City. It was designed by American architect Bruce Price. The roof of the building is noticeably green in color. So we did a little experiment to investigate how and why this occurred.

Material:

• Penny
• Paper Towel
• Vinegar
• A plate 
• Lab sheet (found at the end of this post)

We looked at our penny and talked about what color it was (brown). We also discussed that the penny is made from copper and so is the roof of The Chateau Frontenac. We placed the penny on top of the paper towel and poured some vinegar over it. We set it aside and checked on on it periodically. 

What Happened to the Penny?

The penny is made of copper. The Vinegar on the paper towel helps the penny react with the oxygen in the air. This forms a blue-green colored compound called malachite. This is similar to what happened to the roof of The Chateau, a natural weathering process called oxidization took place, when air and rain water (which contains a small amount of acid) reacted withe copper plates. We also talked about how the same thing happened to the Statue of Liberty. 

The boys recorded their findings on the lab sheet.

Preschool Kindergarten Community

Preschool Construction Activities

Hi guys! For today's construction themed activities we worked on some number recognition by building lego towers, alphabet matching in our sensory bin and some play dough B is for bulldozer activity.

Math:

this was really fun and easy to put together, the objective of this activity was to work on number recognition and different ways to write the number. I wanted him to match the number with the dice quantity/how many fingers and number word. 

He was able to do this activity almost independently the only thing he needed help with was the number words. 

Phonics:

for this activity I combined black beans, our rock alphabets, lower case matching printable and a dump truck. He dug out all the rocks collected them onto the dump truck and drove them over to the ''work site" (printable). 

  Play Dough "B is for Bulldozer " Activity

I helped him roll out the play dough and form the B shape. He traced the outline of the b using rocks. 

                                                                                    

                                                                                                                                                                        

This has been a really fun theme and I am kind of sad tomorrow will be our last day. I can't wait to plan our next theme! :)

Egg Shell Mosiac Craft

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share with you a fun craft using egg shells. For chapter 4 in Story of the World Vol 2 we learned all about the Byzantine Empire. One of the projects the book suggested was a Byzantine Mosaic. The suggested activity was a little time consuming and messy so we went with an easier process and it turned out wonderfully.

Material:

1. Egg Shells ( I used one egg for each child) soak the egg shells in some soap and water for a couple of hours. Let them dry and your ready to use them.
2. Canvas Tile  (4x4)
3. Liquid water color (undiluted) 
4. Paint Brush
5. School Glue
6. Pouring Medium

Pour Glue onto the canvas tile, crush the egg shell onto the glue and leave to dry. 

Once the egg shell has dried and adhered to the canvass paint over it with your chose of water color. Let it dry. 

I had the boys lightly paint using a tapping motion. If you use hard strokes the egg shells will peel off. 

After the paint dries pour some of the pouring medium. It gives it a thick glossy finish and it also keeps the egg shells from falling off. I purchased mine from Michael's. Leave it to dry for 24 hours. 

We only had blue liquid water color but if you have more colors it would turn out really nice. I wish the picture captured how glossy and glass like it turned out. 

That's it! The project was really simple and it turned out beautiful. We will be making more of these mosaics once I get more water colors.
