Math Facts Practice: Watercolor Crayon Resist Art!

My first grader and I are still reviewing his math facts. Our math activity for today was crayon resist art. He loved painting and revealing the hidden math equation.

To do this activity all you need is:
  • watercolor paper (cut up)
  • white crayon to write the equation
  • and watercolor
You can add a paper to record the answers but he just said the answers out loud to me.

Check out our other fun hands on math activities we've been working on.

Quotations and Commas with Macaroni Pasta

I've mentioned before that our school year is coming to a close. My kids are itching for summer to get here, in the mean while we have been reviewing a lot of the material we covered during the year.

For our review I wanted to keep it hands on and fun. So, today we reviewed quotation and comma rules with macaroni pasta. My son absolutely loved it! I typed out some sentences from his grammar curriculum and set him up with the macaroni and he took it from there.

You can have your child glue the macaroni pieces into place but we just placed them on and once I double checked he could move on to the next card.

Check out the other fun games we've been playing this week.

Art Around the World: Russia

Privet,

Hi guys I wanted to share another art around the world post. This craft comes to you from Russia ;). The boys and I made matryoshka patterned dolls. We used Deep Space Sparkles art lesson.

Matryoshka dolls are wooden nesting dolls originating from Russia. They are handcrafted by folk artists and often feature a woman wearing a traditional Russian dress and scarf.

The boys drew the nesting dolls using a pattern.

Using a black marker they made different patterns on the dolls

Once they were satisfied with their patterns we cut out the dolls.

The boys painted their backgrounds.

Once the background dried they glued the matryoshka dolls on to the paper.

I hope you enjoyed this craft and make sure to check out my geography pinterest board for more ideas.

Dice Wars

Our main math curriculum this year is Math U See. We have really enjoyed it, since its the end of the school year our we are getting closer to finishing the book.

To help my son practice and retain his math facts we have been playing lots of math games. One of the games he loves is dice wars.

What you need:
  • two players
  • two dice
  • math manipulative (optional)
  • writing utensil
  • paper or something to write on. I used a card stock and put it inside a page protector
How to play:

Player one rolls both dice and adds up the sum. Player two rolls both dice and adds up the sum, the person with the higher amount wins that round. We used tally marks to keep score, which is a real life use of tally marks. Two birds with one stone ;).

once both players work out their equation I would ask him which number is larger, and he would circle the larger number. That player would get a point.

If he had difficulty with a question he was allowed to use his math blocks.

We also practiced subtraction. With subtraction we said who ever had the smaller amount would get the point.

Big brother wanted to join in the fun so him and I practiced his multiplication facts. We played with the same rules as the addition version.

What math games do you guys like playing?  I am always looking for more games to add on to our math routine.

Our Science Curriculum 2016-2017

Hi guys, I recently went to a homeschool convention and purchased our science curriculum for next year. Our main spine will be Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology. I will not be using the notebooking pages, I plan on putting together our own. To supplement the main text book I purchased science readers, encyclopedias, and puzzles.

That's our science curriculum. If you have any book suggestions that we can add in please leave me a comment below.

Art Around the World: Thailand

Hi guys, today I have another Art Around the World post for you. This craft comes to you from Thailand ;). We created a water color painting of an elephant. Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and the Thai way of life. The elephant has been an integral part of Thailand’s history and culture through both good time and war time. It is a symbol of tradition, history, and royal fortune.

We read The Umbrella Queen a sweet story about a little girl who loves painting elephants, but is discouraged from it because traditionally flowers and leaves are painted on the umbrellas. The king of the village ends up loving her elephant umbrellas and makes her the Umbrella Queen that year.

The boys used oil pastels to decorate their elephants.

I used Art Projects for kids tutorial for this craft.
