Homeschool Curriculum 2017-2018-Geography and Math

Hi guys! I wanted to share more of our homeschool curriculum for 2017-2018 school year. I recently shared our history and science choices you can read all about that here. Today I am sharing our geography and math picks.

Geography:

For this subject the boys and I will be learning all about Africa. Both my husband and I are from Africa, East Africa to be exact. We wanted to teach the boys all about our homeland. We went with Donna Ward's curriculum which is literature based. We will be making our own notebook, learning how to draw Africa, and reading some great books. Some of the books aren't part of the curriculum I just chose to add them in (Draw Africa, Africa is not a Country, Nelson Mandela, A mosquito buzzing in my ear).

Math:

For math we went with Math U See for both boys. My soon to be second grader will start Gemma and my soon to be fourth grader will start Delta.

For review and extra practice I will be tossing in Moffatt girls math packets.

Nature Study: Birds

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share with you our second nature study unit. This time our focus was all things birds. Here are some of the fun activities we worked on.

Some of the books we used during this unit study

Using the Nature Anatomy book the boys drew and labelled the different parts of a bird

We also learned about the 5 basic types of bird feathers.

Bird nests. I asked the boys to pick 4 of their favorite type of nest.

We also played this really fun bird bingo game.

Bird bingo in action

Anatomy of an egg.

To go with what we learned about an egg we did this fun experiment.

If you look really closely you can see some blue where the food color was absorbed.
My water wasn't as dark blue as I would have liked it because I ran out of food coloring but the boys were able to see some result.

We watched Bill Nye birds to help with our unit study
We also watched Magic School Bus cracks a yolk.

Bee Nature Study

Hi guys! Today I wanted to share with you one of our recent nature study units. We will be doing several units during the spring/summer months. The first unit we started with was all about bees. Here are some of the fun activities we worked on.

Who lives in a colony?

The boys drew the members in a colony (Queen, worker bee, and drone).

Anatomy of a worker Bee:

we focused on the wings, compound eyes, and stinger of a worker bee. We used
bubble wrap to represent the compound eyes, parchment paper for the wings, and we learned that a worker bee has a barbed stinger.

Life Cycle of a bee:

this was a fun hands on way to represent the life cycle. We used a grain of rice for the egg, and a cotton ball for the pupa.

We also did several activities from this book.

This was a short mini unit on bees, since we covered all about bees already. Do you guys enjoy nature studies in your homeschool?

Homeschool Curriculum 2017-2018-Science and History

Hi guys! I can't believe we are wrapping up another homeschool year. This would make it our 4th year homeschooling :0. With the end of one school year brings the fun of choosing new curriculum. I don't know about you guys, but this is the most wonderful time of the year (q the music) haha. Today I wanted to share with you our history and science choices for next year. Links for where we purchased the curriculum will be at the bottom of this post.

History:

For history we will be studying about Canada's native groups before we study settlement history. I am so excited!!! This will cover half the school year, the last half we will learn all about Africa. I'll share the material for that in our geography curriculum post.

Read alouds

Activity guides

Picture books.

Science:

We went with Apologia exploring creation with chemistry and physics. We did human anatomy this year using Apologia and we fell in love with the layout and the material.

supplement material that I will pick things out of. This curriculum doesn't really need any added material but I can't help myself.

Along with Canada's Native Peoples we will also be listening to Story of the World Vol 3/4. My eldest really loves the audio versions so I decided to through that in there. That's it guys! What will you be using for history and science?
