As we wrap up our Canada study, we've been focusing on map drawing and labeling. We are using the Draw Canada book to help him learn to draw the map from memory.
We used the pin it map pack from Montessori print shop to practice labeling.
We also played map bingo and used our Montessori puzzle.
He practices daily on the whiteboard for 5 to 10 minutes. Finally he drew it on a large watercolor paper and painted and labeled.
He also wrote and researched landmarks and bodies of water.
We also learned about major rivers of Canada. We made a salt dough model of a river. You can read all about it here.
During any unit study I love connecting our Islamic Studies with each unit we study. For our Botany unit we read the Story of the Two Gardens from Surah Kahf.
We started by watching this video
We also read this book
Then the kids made a garden collage. We painted a white cardstock paper with blue and purples. We let the paper dry. Then the kids tore construction paper and made date palm trees with fruit and dates. The kids added a lightning bolt on the top and some grass on the bottom.
مَا شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ لَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ
Surah Kahf Vs. 39
We concentrated on verse 39 and discussed the attitude of the two men. One was grateful and the other one attributed all his wealth to himself and forgot to thank Allah for his blessings. We talked about some of the blessings we are thankful. Lastly we learned what to say when we have something we are proud of.
Hi guys, today I wanted to share with you a fun hands on activity we did during our botany unit. We read in one of our books that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup, so this led to a liquid measurements lesson.
First we started off by collecting containers around the house that corresponded to each measurement (gallon, quart, pint, and cup). Next we ordered them from the largest to the smallest. Finally, we talked about the equivalent measurement (how many quarts in a gallon, how many pints in a quart, etc.)
Material
1. Construction Paper
2. Scissors
3. Brass Fasteners
After the boys understood the concept we assembled our gallon man.
As part of our botany unit the boys and I learned all about trees. We learned all the different parts of a tree trunk and incorporated some art into our lesson.
We used the tree trunk puzzle from Alison's Montessori to learn the different parts.
We also used our tree slice to get a closer look and observe all the different parts.
using an art lesson from Painted Paper the kids painted different sizes circles.
The art lesson was super easy even my six year old was able to participate. They enjoyed the end result and so did I.
Hi guys, we recently completed a botany unit study and learned about maple trees as part of our Canadian geography studies. Here are some of the activities we did.
(Of all fruits (Allah) placed (on the earth) two of a pair). Surah: 13, Verse: 3
Hi guys, we recently completed a mini botany unit during our Quebec study. We used two units from Allamah Education. We used their seed study and plant classification unit. Here are some of the activities we did.
Seeds
We learned all about the parts of a seed, life cycle of a bean plant, seed dispersal, and planted our seed to observe the life cycle.
Seed dispersal video
Plant Cell
We learned all about the plant cell and made a cake model. You can read all about our cell activities. here and here.
Parts of a Plant
We learned about the different parts of a plant (roots, stem, and leaves) and each of their function. We also learned about the needs of a plant (air, water, soil, sun).
My 8 year old made a model of a tree from Lego and labeled all the parts.
We did an experiment to learn how plants absorb water through their roots, stems, and leaves.
